Time to fish

In order to be successful, each fishing area has its own set of tools and tactics. The bigger the fish gets, the further out you go in the water. Fisheries availability is influenced by seasons, weather and tides.

During rising tides or low tides, the best time to fish is when the water is flowing and the tides are rising or falling. Always wait for an inbound tide since rising water fills feeding sites by releasing marine life from the bottom after an outgoing tide. In turn, this marine life attracts larger fish by feeding them.

The worst time to fish is during slack tides, when there is no flow of water. Slack times might last anything from a few minutes to nine or ten hours or more. There are no currents that bring bait schools into range of the game fish during slack periods, so the fish stop feeding. A lot of what fish eat burrows into the bottom during slow periods.

Rules and Regulations

Tourists fishing in federal waters need to be in possession of a permit for Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (Shark, Tuna, Swordfish, and Billfish). It is mandatory for nonresidents to have a valid Florida freshwater fishing license and permit, depending on their age.
